As she walked round the huge (巨大的) department, store(百货商场), Susan found (发现，找到；创办) it very difficult to choose (挑选,决定) a suitable (合适的,适宜的) Christmas (圣诞节) present for her father. She knew that her father was not easy to be pleased while her mother was always satisfied with any present she got.
Now Susan stopped in front of a counter (柜台) where there were some beautiful ties. "They are really good," the shop-assistant (帮助的,助手) advised her to buy one of them. But Susan knew from past experience (经验,体验) that her choice (选择,选择权) of ties hardly ever pleased her father.
She moved on and then stopped where a lot of people had gathered round a counter. She found some good pipes (烟斗)on sale and the prices were very reasonable (合理的). Susan bought one at once. Although her father only smoked a pipe now and then, she knew that this was a present which was sure to please him.
When she got home, with her small but lovely present in her bag, her parents were already at table having dinner. Her mother looked very happy. "Your father at last decided to stop smoking," She told her daughter.
